Perched atop a pre-war building in Midtown Manhattan, this jewel box penthouse is wrapped by a large terrace with views and exposure to the south, west, and north. When our client engaged Eleven of Eleven, the existing apartment felt dark and small, with an ineffective floor plan. Our updated layout reorganizes the space to maximize the views and connections to the terrace. We opened up the apartment to feel light and bright. The client’s goals were to engage with the city skyline, to connect to the outdoors, and to maximize the interior space. Eleven of Eleven designed the interior and the exterior to do just that.

A classic black and white mosaic floor and bold red entry door set the stage for the intention of the space. With the client, we developed a palette saturated in color and awash in depth and mood. After reconsidering the layout of the kitchen and optimizing it for cooking, we drenched the cabinets and appliances in unique colors. The client hand-selected crystal-pink knobs to wink and sparkle in the light pouring through the new window.

Flanking the smaller terrace, the bedroom is a haven of quiet and reflection. A new skylight perfectly frames a contemplative view of the city sky.

The relocated bathroom is vibrant and polished in tones of teal, pink, chrome, and white. Vivid subway tile and crisply-grouted penny tile gesture to the energy of New York.

The apartment’s masterwork is the grand wraparound terrace that doubles the dwelling space. Here we arranged the flow to open the living room onto the splendid south-facing terrace with two large windows and a double door. The outdoor space can be enjoyed year-round because our design considers the sunlight, the microclimate, and the critical exterior details. We wrapped the terrace with a custom fence and railing aligned to the same height to create visual unity. The clients’ preference for wood and natural materials inspired the palette. Deep and rich tones abound in siding, pavers, fence, lighting, awnings, railing, and paint colors to create a cozy oasis within the city.
