We were requested to refresh an existing two-story brick home, located in Alexandria’s historic Del Ray area. Our proposed design consisted of an interior and exterior renovation and a new addition to create a brighter, more contemporary look and feel. We explored several options for exterior materials to complement the existing brick facade. The client was interested in a long lasting, low maintenance solution. With the existing house situated on a small lot, an addition meant the loss of some of the backyard space. Part of the design challenge was finding new outdoor space with the addition and the existing house.

The client put great emphasis on re-envisioning their kitchen. Light woods, soft greys and white marble comprised the material palette for the kitchen and dining to create a visually soothing and spacious area.

To reinforce the interior-exterior relationship and allow more daylight into the kitchen, we included sliding doors on the south wall that open to a covered back porch that can be enjoyed in the evenings. Directly above the porch is a second floor veranda that extends from the master bedroom and overlooks the backyard. The veranda connects to the rooftop deck via stairs, and opens to a view of the private garden and xeriscaping below. We included an improved rainwater drainage strategy, utilizing a modern, decorative downspout between the sloped roof and deck that feeds into a grate at the ground level. Our design addressed the client’s needs as well as incorporated outdoor areas at all three levels.
